Charitable donations to various causes is a time honored tradition in the United States. Our country uses its generosity to fund not only domestic charitable efforts but also those around the world. Henry (Hank) Goldstein, CFRE, chair of the Giving USA Foundation (www.givingusa.org) states that “Charitable giving is the lifeblood of more than a million American nonprofits. These contributions fund research in medicine, the social sciences, endow scholarships, support museums and orchestras and so much more”. The latest figures for a full year from the Giving USA Foundation show that in 2004, estimated charitable giving reached $248.52 billion, a new record for philanthropic giving in the United States1.
